Born in 1873 into a family of engineers and farmers, Alberto’s father was involved in railroad construction, instilling in Alberto a passion for travel and exploration. This naturally led to a fascination with aviation, Alberto’s greatest passion.

After moving to France, Santos-Dumont built a number of balloons, airships, and later primitive aircraft. Alberto quickly made significant breakthroughs in the history of early flight, including manning the very first publicly viewed manned flight in Europe. Santos-Dumont’s high profile, daring missions put him in company with some of the most prominent personalities of France, including Louis Cartier. Cartier and Santos-Dumont’s friendship blossomed from mutual respect for innovation, creativity, and legacy. In 1904, Louis Cartier gave Santos-Dumont a special watch, designed to be worn on the wrist— a novel concept at the time. The primitive, sturdy square watch was essentially the first true sports watch.

The so-called Cartier Santos was as daring a creation as Santos-Dumont’s missions. Watch companies produced a few purpose-designed pieces for military use in the early 20th century, but most watches that were sold at retailers were designed with purely fashion in mind. In the 1950s and 1960s, the tool watch market exploded, fueled by the popularity of SCUBA diving and the growing interest in aviation. Breitling was one of the earliest manufactures to respond to the trend when they released the Navitimer in 1954.

We’ve been referring to the Navitimer as a watch, but that’s not quite right. The Navitimer truly is a computer, and also happens to be one of the best damn looking watches out there. How cool is that?

Breitling has been selling Navitimers consistently since the 1950s, so we can’t say that vintage 806s are a rare find. Yet while there are a lot of them out there, finding one in good condition is not an easy task. For whatever reason, most were not treated very well by their original owners and are now in a sad shape, which is an unfortunate fate for any watch, let alone one of the most iconic pieces ever made. Most of the time the pieces we come across are less than desirable for one reason or another, but every so often one comes along that simply blows us away, and we can't wait to share it with our colleagues, friends and fellow enthusiasts.

This awesome 1970s Movado chronograph has totally slipped under the radar of most enthusiasts, and while we knew of their existence, we hardly ever see one in the metal.

At least three distinct elements go into making this unusual chronograph an awesome piece worthy of your attention:

Firstly, the design is evocative of the integrated bracelet sports watches common of the era. You have probably heard of some of them (Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, Patek Philippe Nautilus, IWC Ingenieur SL). The design is incredibly comfortable to wear and totally 70s, meaning it is very much wearable today.

Secondly, the detailing on the watch is impressive. Comparable to the Heuer Monaco of the era, the 40mm case is substantial and makes for a sizable statement on the wrist. With a gorgeous two-tone blue dial with triple subsidiary registers, angled internal tachymetre scale, diagonally-oriented date window, and "rocker-style" chrono pushers, this is one of those timepieces that is virtually impossible to stop looking at and playing with on your wrist.

Finally, the movement inside this piece is none other than the legendary El Primero by Zenith. One of the world's first automatic chronograph units, the El Primero is a high-beat mechanical movement that is still in use today. Launched in 1969, Zenith made their movements available to a few other manufactures. Back in the day Movado was one of the premier watchmakers, and selected some impressive movements for their line. "Off-Brand" timepieces are often a great value for collectors, and this is no exception.

Early El Primero powered chronographs are incredibly hot on the market, yet this one slips under the radar.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0712/8570/2900/files/AS10843_40992480_MOVADO_ELPRIMERO-1.jpg?v=1777611199
