Nivada Grenchen Antarctic GMT Limited Edition For Hodinkee - (Ref. 32073A) Product Details

Our limited edition release is a thoroughly modern and Hodinkee-tweaked take on the original reference 87013. At 36mm in diameter and 40mm lug-to-lug, this 225-piece limited edition builds on the motifs from the "Gray Glow" Hodinkee exclusives, while subtle des ign changes simplify the look and make for a more robust, go-anywhere GMT.

What stays is the reliable, automatic, and self-win ding SOPROD C125 movement, with 42 hours of power reserve and a frequency of 4Hz. With that comes a 24-hour rotating inner bezel, ad justed via the crown at 2 o’clock. The crown at 4 o’clock independently adjusts the GMT hand and date in the first position and the 12-hour time in the second. Most importantly, we’ve upgraded the crystal to sapphire, which doubles the water resistance from 50 to 100 meters, a feature exclusive to our Limited Edition and more in line with the Antarctic’s hard-wearing history.

From Aquamatic to Antarctic: Nivada's Navy-Proven Legacy

In the mid-1950s, the Antarctic line was first introduced by Nivada as the "Aquamatic," a rugged, time-only, water-resistant wristwatch. It wasn’t until 1955 that the model was put to the test when it was worn by members of the U.S. Navy's Deep Freeze operations in Antarctica. Exceling in every situation they could throw at it, from the relentless cold to extreme pressure, Nivada celebrated by renaming the watch as we know it today — the Antarctic. The GMT variant was produced in the 1960s in very low numbers. So low, in fact, that the example sold in the Hodinkee Shop is one of the only known pieces to come to market.

Design Details: Case, Dial, and Finishing Touches

The case is vertically brushed on top, as opposed to the polished finish of the mainline Antarctic GMT, tying the Hodinkee version further to the original brushed compressor case that was supplied by Ervin Piquerez S.A. (EPSA). The case thickness is a svelte 11.1mm, a nearly 2 mm reduction from the 12.75mm of the original. The caseback offers a further nod to the vintage example, with a stainless steel penguin engraving on a steel medallion as opposed to gold. The piece is completed with two strap options — a hard-wearing grey NATO and an equally robust grey sueded-leather strap.

On the dial, keen eyes will pick up the change in branding as the full Nivada Grenchen logo is now on full display at 12 o'clock, while a modest "AUTOMATIC GMT" completes the look on the bottom half. Forgoing the script "Antarctic" altogether, the resulting look is perfectly balanced. Matching the applied hour markers, nearly every part of the watch that is white, including the applied writing, the inner GMT bezel, and the handset, is finished in Super-LumiNova, which glows bright green in low light.
