The 1970s was a golden age for creative industrial design, with watchmaking being particularly fertile ground for innovation.

Oversized cases, bright colors, strange complications — the confluence of the hippie movement with new sporting and leisure activities resulted in specialist timepieces whose fun-loving designs are finding new life today as beloved vintage goods.

This particular funky ‘70s timepiece is from beloved American-founded brand Bulova. The so called "Jet Star" was introduced in the early 70s and prized for its playful coloring and signature turtle-shaped oversized case. Housed in a stainless steel cushion case with a multi-link bracelet that integrates into the petite lugs of the piece, it features a cool - multi color dial display executed in silver and blue with red accents. At three o'clock, a day-date function frames out the dial. Atop the bezel Bulova set a blue inner bezel to match the dial.

Powered by an automatic movement, this humble Bulova is a prime example of creative ‘70s watch design that nevertheless remains moderately inconspicuous. In 2023, Bulova decided to revive this family by recreating the Jet Star with a commitment to design-forward pieces. There's no doubt this era produced some of the coolest watches our industry has ever seen.
