Patek Philippe Calatrava - (Ref. 5226G-001) Product Details

Overall Condition: Excellent condition overall. Case shows light signs of wear from gentle use and handling. Dial and handset are in excellent condition.

First presented in 1932 with the Reference 96, the Patek Philippe Calatrava is the benchmark for classic men’s dress watches. The groundbreaking reference set the stage for nearly every piece Patek has released since, and became the blueprint for other brands’ approaches to classy men’s timepieces. Heavily influenced by the Bauhaus design philosophy, the Calatrava was then considered extremely modern with its minimalist, ‘less is more’ approach to watch design.

In the years since 1932, Patek has released dozens of Calatrava references, each with its own idiosyncrasies. Almost all share the underlying DNA of the 96, prioritizing subtle elegance above all else.

In 1985, Patek Philippe was looking to distinguish itself in a post-Quartz Crisis era of the luxury watch market. According to horological lore, the brand enlisted help from a brilliant Geneva-based ad man — Renée Bittel— to help Patek define itself for a new customer base. Bittel said Patek Philippe needed a symbol — something that would capture the classic Patek aesthetic. Patek President Philippe Stern asked Bittel what this would look like, and legend has it Bittel drew what would later become the Ref. 3919 — another Bauhaus design, this time incorporating a hobnail bezel and printed Roman numerals. This would be the first Calatrava to actually bear that designation in an official capacity.

In 2022, Patek Philippe released this watch, the Ref. 5226G-001. While it lacks the hobnail (or clous de Paris) bezel, it does feature the important pattern on its caseband, updating the Calatrava aesthetic for a modern consumer. Measuring 40mm wide and just 8.53mm tall, its white gold housing boasts a signed crown, a sapphire crystal, a smooth bezel, and short lugs. The stunning charcoal gray gradient dial with a grained pattern flaunts an outer black section with an open 1/5th-seconds track in a vintage-colored typeface, while luminous, applied white gold 'Arabic' indices, a date window at 3 o'clock, and a luminous white gold 'syringe' handset convey 1930s/1940s design influence.

Powered by the automatic Patek Philippe Calibre 26-330 with 30 jewels and 212 components, the Ref. 5226G-001 comes paired to a black strap with an 18K white gold pin buckle, but also includes a tan calfskin leather strap with contrasting top-stitching. Happily, this example also includes its factory goodies and signed Certificate of Origin.

It's been many years since the Calatrava received such a significant (and handsome) overhaul. After you try the 5226G-001 on in person, we're quite sure you'll fall in love with it — just as we did.
