Unknown Sandoz Typhoon - (Ref. 1745) Product Details

Overall Condition: Good condition overall. Case shows moderate wear. Dial shows heavy patination to lume and some lume loss.

The 1970s produced no shortage of overbuilt dive watches—but every so often, one comes along that feels like it was designed by someone who had just watched The Spy Who Loved Me and immediately started sketching.

This vintage Sandoz Typhoon 1000m is exactly that kind of watch.

Massive, angular, and unapologetically tool-driven, the Typhoon was built during an era when dive watches still prioritized brute capability over refinement. Rated to a staggering 1,000 meters, it features a monocoque stainless steel case construction designed for serious underwater use, paired with the sort of oversized proportions that make modern dive watches suddenly feel a bit self-conscious.

But what really makes this example sing is the dial. The charcoal-grey surface has an almost volcanic texture, radiating outward beneath oversized numerals at 12 and 6, and applied indices and broad luminous hands. Combined with the engraved bezel and deeply set date window, the whole thing feels distinctly futuristic in that wonderfully analog 1970s way—less luxury accessory, more experimental diving instrument.

The Typhoon line appeared in a variety of dial colors over the years, but this darker monochromatic execution may be the strongest of the bunch. It gives the watch an almost brutalist quality, especially when paired with the perforated black rally strap that adds just the right amount of motorsport energy to the overall package.

Like many of the great under-the-radar tool watches of the era, the Typhoon exists in that sweet spot collectors increasingly love: unusual enough to start conversations, functional enough to still feel purposeful, and strange enough to remind you just how creative Swiss sports watch design once became.

We love this particular diver because the best 1970s dive watches look like they were built to survive both deep water AND a car chase.
