The Mara—Scots Gaelic for "of the sea"—is Paulin's inaugural dive watch, and a genuinely capable one. Our edition takes Paulin’s approach to dive watches in a slightly different direction: back toward the mid-century divers of the 1950s and '60s that we’ve collected and obsessively covered for years. It pays homage to that golden era—literally—with a traditional, genuine gilt dial, Paulin's signature typography, and antiqued Super-LumiNova. The result is a piece that feels like a vintage dive watch brought back to life, but engineered for modern wearability.

The Gilt Dial: A Lost Art, Revived

Through the 1950s and into the early '60s, gilt was simply how a good tool watch dial was made: warm gold text revealed through a layer of black, with a depth and lustre that shifts with the light. By the mid-1960s, most watchmakers had moved to cheaper printed white text, and true gilt became one of those details collectors hunt for in vintage references and rarely find in new watches. The Paulin Mara – Limited Edition for Hodinkee revives the real thing. Each dial begins as a brass blank, electroplated in gold, before its text is printed with a chemical resist and the dial is plated deep matte black in a galvanic bath. When the resist is washed away, the gold is revealed beneath the surface. Finally, the hour markers are hand-painted in antiqued Super-LumiNova, matched to the hands and bezel. The gold isn't applied on top; it's revealed from within.

Our Design: A True Skin Diver

The case keeps the cushion-shaped silhouette of the standard Mara, but nearly everything else has been reconsidered. Swapping the Swiss La Joux-Perret movement for the slim, reliable Miyota 9039 let us put resources into what matters most, the gilt dial and a double-domed sapphire bezel, while keeping the price at $1,000. It also allowed us to reimagine the Mara as a true skin diver, rated to 100m, with the case slimmed from 13.5mm to 11.8mm. The text on the dial and bezel is set in Wim, Paulin's own typeface, and the hour hand borrows its form from the "i" in Paulin's logo. The light grey, 120-click unidirectional bezel overhangs the case at 12 and 6 for grip with wet or gloved hands, finished with polished, sphere-shaped indentations echoed on the screw-down crown. The watch is delivered on a classic grey NATO strap with a signed Hodinkee buckle, precisely the pairing a mid-century tool watch would have worn.
