Eric Clapton's guitar playing is legendary, and his taste in watches is no less distinguished.

The bluesman was once the owner of a platinum Patek Philippe perpetual calendar chronograph that sold at Christie's for $12 million, but long before that, photographs taken during his years with Cream captured him wearing another remarkable chronograph — one that would become closely associated with his name. Collectors now refer to the watch — a Universal Genève Tri-Compax — as the "Clapton."

The association has helped make the watch one of Universal Genève's most recognizable chronographs, but the Tri-Compax is only one chapter in a history that stretches back to the earliest days of the wristwatch.

Founded in Le Locle in 1894, Universal Genève established a reputation for producing high-quality watches and developing its own movements. The acquisition of movement designer and complications specialist Louis-Édouard Berthoud in 1897 further strengthened the company's expertise in complicated watchmaking. By the 1930s, U.G. had introduced the Compax family of chronographs, which quickly earned a following among Europe's watch-buying elite.

The Tri-Compax, introduced in the 1940s, was the most elaborate expression of the line. In addition to a chronograph, it combined a full calendar — day, date and month — with a moon-phase display. Despite the amount of information packed onto its dial, the watch is remarkably balanced and legible. Its three chronograph registers sit neatly among applied hour markers and luminous plots, producing a design that is both technically ambitious and unusually restrained.

In its early years, the Tri-Compax was offered in precious metals and gold-plated cases, attracting notable wearers including President Harry Truman. Later examples, however, gave the model an entirely different character. Steel cases, sporty proportions, and distinctive "panda" dials transformed the Tri-Compax into one of the era's most compelling chronographs — and ultimately helped secure its place among vintage-watch icons.

The most famous of these later watches may be the example associated with Clapton. Introduced in 1967, the so-called "Eric Clapton" Tri-Compax is distinguished by its steel case, 'panda' dial, and external tachymeter scale. Inside is Universal Genève's Caliber 281, a chronograph movement with an integrated calendar mechanism and an important place in the company's history.

For Clapton, the watch was simply a striking piece of equipment worn during the height of Cream's fame. For collectors, it has become something more: a tangible link between one of rock's most influential guitarists and one of the great chronographs of the 20th century. This example, with its screw-down caseback, signed crown, pump pushers, clean white dial, black tachymeter bezel, luminous tritium plots, four subdials, dual calendar apertures, and luminous 'baton' handset, features honest wear indicating a life well-loved on its previous owner's wrist.
