Accutron Watches Bulova Accutron 218 Dress Model - (Ref. 952) Product Details

Overall Condition: Good overall condition with honest wear throughout for its age.

Not every revolution announces itself with a bang. Sometimes, it just hums.

When Bulova introduced the Accutron in 1960, it fundamentally changed the way a watch could keep time. Instead of relying on a traditional balance wheel, the Accutron employed a tiny electronic tuning fork vibrating at 360 hertz, producing the now-famous soft hum that became its signature. Accurate to within a minute a month, it was one of the most advanced wristwatches of its era and a genuine glimpse into the future.

This example is a classic Accutron 218 "Dress" model from the early 1970s, showcasing the clean, modern aesthetic that made the collection so appealing. Housed in a stainless steel asymmetrical case, it features the characteristic crown tucked discreetly at 4 o'clock—a defining feature of the 218 movement family. The silver sunburst dial is wonderfully restrained, punctuated by applied black-accented baton indices, a vivid red seconds hand, and the applied tuning fork emblem at 6 o'clock, a quiet reminder that this is no ordinary mechanical watch.

Inside beats the legendary Bulova Calibre 218 tuning fork movement, whose electronically driven mechanism occupies a fascinating chapter between the age of traditional mechanical watchmaking and the arrival of quartz. It remains one of the most innovative movements ever fitted to a wristwatch and, thanks to its distinctive technology, one of the most enjoyable to own.

The Spaceview may receive most of the attention, but these standard Accutron models are where the design really shines. Clean, architectural, and unmistakably American, they capture the optimistic spirit of the Space Age without blasting it. More than fifty years later, they remain one of vintage watchmaking's smartest and most affordable technological icons.
