Accutron Watches Bulova Accutron 'Brown Fumé' - (Ref. 2210) Product Details
Overall Condition: Very good condition overall. Case and bracelet show only light wear and intact plating. Dial and handset are in great condition.
Few watches capture the technological optimism of the 1960s and ’70s quite like the Bulova Accutron. Introduced in 1960, the Accutron replaced the traditional balance wheel with an electronically powered tuning fork, creating the characteristic hum and remarkable accuracy that made it one of the defining horological innovations of the pre-quartz era.
Dating to circa 1973/1974, this Accutron is particularly interesting for what is inside. Its Calibre 2210 belongs to Bulova’s tiny 221 family, introduced in 1973 and regarded as the smallest tuning-fork watch movement ever put into production. Operating at an unusually high 440 Hz, the miniature mechanism was developed primarily to allow Bulova to create smaller, slimmer watches. In a wonderfully counterintuitive move, the company also installed it in larger men’s models such as this one, using a spacer to accommodate the diminutive movement.
The watch itself is pure 1970s. Its gold-plated case has a softly rounded, almost cushion-like profile surrounding a beautifully graduated brown-to-champagne sunburst dial. Applied block hour markers, simple luminous hands, a peripheral minute track, and the Accutron tuning-fork emblem at 6 o’clock give the dial a clean, almost futuristic quality. There is no seconds hand or date display to interrupt the design.
Fitted to a gold-tone expandable bracelet with a signed deployant clasp, this Reference 2210 represents an especially fascinating moment in watchmaking: mechanical horology was being challenged by electronics, while quartz was waiting just around the corner. The technology may have been transitional, but the result is anything but forgettable. A tiny 440 Hz tuning fork humming away inside a big, unapologetically 1970s gold watch.
