Accutron Watches Bulova Accutron Canadian Railroad - (Ref. 218 N2) Product Details

Overall Condition: Good overall condition with surface wear on its case and bracelet. The crystal has some surface wear while the dial and hands are in excellent condition.

Few watches illustrate the technological optimism of the 1960s and 1970s quite like the Bulova Accutron. Introduced in 1960, the Accutron revolutionized timekeeping with its electronically driven tuning fork movement, offering unprecedented accuracy years before quartz would transform the industry. The unmistakable hum of its movement and perfectly smooth sweeping seconds hand became hallmarks of one of the most important wristwatches of the twentieth century.

This exceptional Railroad Approved R.R. 218-0 is among the most distinctive Accutrons produced. Designed to meet the demanding standards of the Canadian railroads, it features a crisp white dial with oversized black Arabic numerals, an inner 24-hour military track, and a date aperture at 3 o'clock. Most notably, the dial replaces the traditional 12 with a bold "0" at the top of the hour—a unique requirement of Canadian railroad specifications that immediately distinguishes this model from its American counterparts. Bold black hands and a vibrant orange sweep seconds hand ensure outstanding legibility at a glance.

Inside beats Bulova's celebrated Caliber 218-0 tuning fork movement. Rather than relying on a conventional balance wheel, the movement uses an electronically driven tuning fork vibrating at 360 Hz to power the watch. The result is the signature humming sound and fluid, uninterrupted sweep of the seconds hand that made the Accutron one of the most advanced timepieces of its era.

Completing the watch is a vintage gold-tone expansion bracelet fitted with a charming "Stop / Perpetual Calendar" window insert—a wonderfully nostalgic accessory popular throughout the late 1960s and 1970s. Originally designed to hold a miniature sliding paper or metal perpetual calendar, it provided a clever analog reference for the date before the age of digital devices.

While collectors often gravitate toward the Spaceview, Railroad Approved Accutrons represent another fascinating chapter in Bulova's history. Purpose-built for professionals whose work demanded precision and reliability, they combine historic significance with unmistakable mid-century industrial design. Add in the period expansion bracelet and perpetual calendar insert, and this example becomes an especially evocative time capsule from one of the most innovative decades in watchmaking.
