By the 1970s, Bulova's revolutionary Accutron movement had already proven itself everywhere from aircraft cockpits to NASA instrumentation. Having established its technological credentials, the company was free to have a little fun.

This 1974 Bulova Accutron "Mickey Mouse" (dial code N4 - 1974) pairs one of the most innovative electronic movements of the twentieth century with one of the world's most recognizable characters. It's an unlikely combination that works remarkably well. Housed in a distinctive gold-plated asymmetrical case, the dial sits slightly lower within the broad brushed bezel, giving the watch a graphic, almost architectural appearance that feels unmistakably of its era.

Of course, the dial steals the show. Mickey Mouse has appeared on countless watches since his debut in the 1930s, but few examples are as charming as this. His outstretched arms serve as the hour and minute hands, while the framed date window at three o'clock is cleverly integrated into the composition. What could have been little more than licensed merchandise instead becomes a wonderfully executed piece of industrial design.

Inside beats Bulova's celebrated Accutron Calibre 218 tuning fork movement. Rather than relying on a traditional balance wheel, it uses an electronically driven tuning fork vibrating at 360 hertz to regulate time. The result is the movement's signature smooth sweep of the seconds hand and the unmistakable electronic hum that has fascinated collectors for generations. Completing the package is the signed crown, correctly bearing the Accutron tuning fork emblem.
