Cartier Baignoire

Overall Condition: Excellent condition overall. Case is strong, showing only light wear and recessed screws. Caseback engravings are crisp. Dial has developed an eggshell patina with only that faintest bit of edge-wear noted.

Few watch designs demonstrate Cartier’s mastery of form quite like the Baignoire. Named after the French word for “bathtub,” its elongated oval silhouette has remained one of the maison’s most enduring creations for more than a century. Elegant without being ornate, it embodies Cartier’s unique ability to transform simple geometry into something instantly recognizable.

This exceptional example dates to the 1970s, a particularly compelling era for the Parisian jeweler, when many of its finest dress watches were powered by movements supplied by Jaeger-LeCoultre. Housed in a graceful 18-karat yellow gold case measuring approximately 23mm, it features the quintessential Cartier aesthetic: an off-white dial with bold black Roman numerals, blued steel hands, and the signature sapphire cabochon winding crown. Inside beats a manually wound Jaeger-LeCoultre mechanical movement, reflecting the close relationship between two of Switzerland’s most respected names in watchmaking during the period.

Completing the watch is custom black lizard leather strap paired with an original 18-karat yellow gold Cartier deployant clasp. Measuring approximately 32mm in length, the watch retains its signed dial and movement, while the case and clasp bear the appropriate Cartier signatures, maker’s marks, and French assay marks.

Today, the Baignoire feels every bit as modern as it did half a century ago. In an era increasingly drawn to refined proportions and jewelry-inspired watches, this 1970s example serves as a reminder that Cartier perfected the formula long before it became fashionable once again.
